More James Dean on my lunch break

I painted the same picture again. It's fun to play around with a simple motif and a small format, the watercolours are 8 x 11.5 cm on Arches rough, 300g.

Lunch break with James Dean

I wanted to practice my watercolour figures so I chose that rather famous picture of James Dean walking in the rain in New York. I completed these two paintings in half an hour. Speed helps me, I don't have time to think, when I think everything goes wrong. Each watercolour is 8 x 11,5 cm in size on Arches rough, 300g.

Lunchtime watercolour

It's amazing how hard it is to get back into a routine. Today, I finally started painting again during my lunch break. I mean, it's been at least two weeks since the last one! I'm such a slacker.

Lunchtime watercolour

I'm trying to get back into a rhythm with my painting. I have been a bit lost lately, mainly because I have so much going on in my life besides art. This watercolour sketch took two lunchtimes to complete. It's a portrait of a Swedish artist that I admire. It's not a perfect likeness, I wasn't concerned with that, I just wanted to paint a picture. Tomorrow I will paint another lunchtime watercolour and it might even be an improvement on today's effort. Who knows.

Watercolour practice.

Monday, 30th of March, 2015
I didn't know what to paint during my lunch hour, I only had a half an hour. I decided to do a bit of cloud practice.

Wednesday's lunchtime painting

I could have been more subtle with the highlights but it was in my lunchtime rush. 45 minutes and done. :)

Horses are tricky

I've been painting horses recently, they are difficult to paint and draw but I like the challenge. This small painting used to be much larger but I chopped off the legs due to my inability to capture their movement. Meanwhile I'm working on two other horse paintings and as usual, the more one practices, the easier it gets.

Lunchtime watercolour

White horse by David Meldrum
White horse. 11.5 x 7.8 cm Fabriano GF 300g
I must admit, I need a break from sailing boats, I love sailing and the Stockholm archipelago but I have to resist it for a while. I decided to paint a horse yesterday instead, I build horse-sport websites during the day so it feels kinda natural to paint them too. It is a small painting, 11.5 x 7.8 cm. Keeping it little means less surface to paint and so practical for lunch break watercolour painting. I see improvement in my technique, painting and drawing as much as I can really pays, which feel really nice.
This week I have painted every morning for an hour before going to work, I paint at lunchtime, I have Life Drawing twice and figure painting once during the seven days.

Lunchtime watercolour

I started this lunchtime watercolour last week, I didn't finish it during my break so I spent one more hour on the painting yesterday morning. I am testing to see if I can cope with getting up one hour earlier at the moment. I started yesterday so it's early days. I'm too tired in the evenings after a full-day's work to feel inspired to paint, getting up earlier feels better, it's tough but better, if you know what I mean. It's not easy being an artist but it's very rewarding!

Lunchtime watercolour

This watercolour of a Stockholm tram took me two lunchtimes. I struggled with the background, I should have done a tonal sketch first, unfortunately I do not have time to be that professional. I prefer quantity to quality at the moment anyway, it's more important for me to just paint as often as I possibly can and learn. The masterpieces will come later, I hope.

Lunch Bunny

Winter Bunny 20150109. Fabriano FG 300g 17 x 22 cm
My lunchtime watercolours have to be simple in composition in order for me to complete a painting in 30 - 45 minutes. I choose sailing boats and water scenes partly for this reason and partly, well, I just like sailing. Some friends asked recently, "Do you do anything besides sailing boats?" so this is for them, a winter bunny. It's kinda a cute, isn't it!

Back to work

The Archipelago. A5 Fabriano GF 300g

Christmas is definitely over, yesterday was my first day back at work. I painted this small A5 watercolour during my lunch break,  I wasn't concerned about creating a masterpiece,  I just wanted to get back into the routine of painting during lunchtimes again.

Two lunchtime watercolours from December

I had a great Christmas with my family and friends, unfortunately I still haven't mastered handling the stress of everything that has to be done before the holidays. It's one of the busiest times of the year for me work-wise. If I was clever I'd buy all the presents and write all the Christmas cards the month before, but I'm not that smart.
So, I did not paint as much as I'd have liked in December but still my lunchtime watercolour effort is helping me produce more work than ever before. The more I paint, the better I become which of course feels good. Next year, I will paint more often and I'll paint larger formats too. One of my sons is studying abroad in the New Year so now I have a studio space at home until he comes back in the summer. I guess it won't be long before he flies the nest completely, sad, but I gain a studio.

Happy New Year! :)

A lunch time watercolour

I was so busy last week, I didn't have a chance to take a photo of this until today. Actually there was 5 - 10 minutes sun here in Stockholm today! We have very flat, grey, overcast skies here most of November and December, difficult to copy ones art, depressing too.
Even though I'm busy at work I still try and do a watercolour each lunchtime, nothing last week but I should get a few done this coming week. Something to look forward to in this gloomy Nordic darkness. I used two photographs as reference.

Some lunchtime watercolours

Here are some of my recent lunchtime watercolours. 30 - 45 minutes and they're done. It feels good to produce work each day, maybe it could be better if I had more time, but maybe not, having time is no guarantee of success. Life's funny that way.

Friday's lunchtime watercolour

It was a productive week, I managed to paint a watercolour each lunchtime for a whole week. It feels real good to have achieved this. I learn something new each time, which means I am learning at quite a pace.
I  spent thirty minutes painting Friday's effort and I  later spent ten minutes adding highlights and darks at home during the weekend.

Thursday's lunchtime watercolour

I spent thirty to forty five minutes on this during my lunch break. I added some highlights and darks when I came home from work.

Tuesday's lunchtime watercolour

Yeap, still practising my water and sky skills. This was painted on Arches rough 300g, I think it is becoming my favourite paper.
