Artist - Prashant Prabhu

Watercolour by Prashant Prabhu

I discovered this Indian watercolour artist from Mumbai, his name is Prashant Prabhu. I find his stylised landscapes very inspiring. He doesn't enter watercolour competitions and so I guess this is why I've never heard of him before. Visit his website here.

Lunch time portrait

I seem to want to draw and paint artists that I admire. This week's offering is Alberto Giacometti. I should have made his nose a little longer and a little bigger but otherwise I am happy with the result. Normally I tend to draw very quickly so this was an exercise in patience for my part. It took 90 minutes roughly to complete.

Joaquín Sorolla

A Spanish impressionist that I admire. This one is for sale at Sotheby's in London! Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) Niños en la playa, Valencia, 27.5 X 39.5 in, oil on canvas.

Visit WikiPainting.org to see his work.

I've been too busy to focus on my own art, but tonight I hope to go to life drawing  :)

Margaret Bowland - Painter of beauty.

I like her choice of subject matter. Taboo breaking is healthy and refreshing. She is also a very talented portrait painter, which is the icing on the cake! Visit her web site here.

Steve Hanks - Watercolour realist

Steve Hanks can certainly paint a nude. I admire his work, the detail is amazing, I guess he paints from photographs, it would be impossible to capture so much detail otherwise.

Piet Lap - I want to take a closer look at his work at a later date. I know nothing about him except that he paints extremely well! Here is a link to his website.

John Singer Sargent

Rosina by John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent, I like his work, I like his official web site too but I wonder is there another site out there that is even better? - With superior resolutions and with no copyright protection covering one third of each image. The picture featured here is called, "Rosina" and I haven't downloaded it from the official site. PUH!
Seriously though, if you know of a better John Singer Sargent site than this do please let me know.

Watercolour!

Watercolour by Stanislaw Zoladz

Stanislaw Zoladz was born in Poland and today lives in Nacka, Sweden. His water reflections are so photo-realistic! It's not what I personally aspire to as a student of watercolour, I think impressionism is my thing but it doesn't stop me admiring the incredible detail and skill of his work. His website is well worth a visit. Click here to visit.

Louis le Brocquy, artist 1916 - 2012

Irish artist Louis le Brocquy died last month, I'd forgotten how good he was, I don't know if he hung out with Bacon and Freud but his work is quite similar. I'm currently learning to paint watercolour portraits the Charles Reid way, Louis le Brocquy has a surprisingly similar watercolour style, ...although Charles Reid seems to be more cheerful in personality. Visit: http://www.lebrocquy.com/ Unfortunately his website is difficult to navigate but it's worth the visit. Louis le Brocquy obituary, in The Guardian

Sandra Flood, portrait artist with composition skills

I came across Sandra Flood's website while surfing last night, her oil painting technique is very good but her composition talent is even better. I really enjoyed trawling her site.

Learning to watercolour

I received two great DVD's in the post yesterday. Watercolouring by Charles Reid and Alvaro Castagnet. I have watched the Charles Reid film and found it really inspiring, so hopefully you will see a big improvement in my watercolouring very soon! It would be nice to go on a watercolour course with these guys but I could not afford it. I recommend these tutorials to anyone who is interested in improving their skills. Not recommended for beginners. Go here if you would like to see more tutorial videos from APV.

My first SketchCrawl

I'm not getting much time to sketch this week, too much work but I have to pay the bills. On Saturday I go to my first SketchCrawl here in Stockholm, I cannot remember ever doing any urban sketching before so I'm really looking forward having a go. My wish is to try sketching in an impressionistic style, like Henry Arifin, Alvaro Castagnet or Joseph Zbukvic and I am most likely just going to make a expressionistic mess; but hey, I'll have fun doing it. There is the added bonus of getting the chance to meet some new and interesting people who have similar interests.

Watercolor: James Toogood's "Mixed Emotions"

This is a watercolour, a very detailed and realistic one by James Toogood. I wonder was he given that surname at birth? It fits him well. If you would like to see how he acheived this work of art click here.
